Justin Pitschmann

I photograph because it makes sense to me. It’s how I best interpret and exposit beauty. My photography works to isolate, pinpoint, and reduce life down to simple frames. By doing this, all of the other noise and distractions are removed, allowing more focus on the beauty of the world within the frame. After realizing this, I started to look at the world more through frames, and found I quite preferred it. It’s easy to find any number of things in a given moment that are not beautiful… but, can I instead find the frames that are beautiful? Can I find those hidden gems of beauty present within this world? And can I inspire others to see them as well? Through my photography, I hope to answer “yes” and, in doing so, contribute to a better, fuller, more hopeful world.

Equipment

My main shooting equipment consists of two Minolta SRT 101 35mm film cameras. Manufactured in the 1970s, this camera is fully manual, with no auto features. With every photograph I adjust the shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focus, and framing. The camera does have a through the lens light meter that helps me with proper exposure. I chose this camera because I wanted to learn photography, to understand its inner workings, and because I love a challenge. At the moment I work with three lenses: a 50mm, a 100mm macro, and a 130mm, all made by Minolta. The rest of my cameras are disposable cameras, with the exception of a 1926 Kodak brownie.
